Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs were bred to be an all around farm and family dog. They come from the ancient Roman Mastiff type dogs. They were known as a poor man's horse. (We call them house horses). They have been used for pulling carts, herding or droving live stock, and guarding. They will never be happy away from their family. New owners need to be willing to spend many hours socializing and training their new pet.
